Frequently Asked Questions
General Questions
15.dev is a sequel to 15.ai, a text-to-speech system designed to generate realistic-sounding voices with minimal training data. The project started back in 2016 at MIT as a personal experiment exploring possibilities in AI voice synthesis.
The system uses neural speech synthesis techniques (artificial intelligence) to create voices that sound natural and expressive. It only needs a small amount of voice data to generate speech patterns, intonations, and emotions.
Yes, 15.dev is free for personal, non-commercial projects. You can review the Terms of Service for complete details.
15.ai was named after my 2020 claim that a voice could be cloned with just 15 seconds of data, which led to the online handle 15. The sequel naturally became "15.dev".
Usage & Limitations
Simply go to the main page, select a character voice, enter your text, and click generate. The system will process your text and provide an audio file with the synthesized speech.
There are reasonable rate limits in place to ensure fair usage for everyone. These limits may adjust based on server load and other factors. If you need higher limits for a specific project, please get in touch.
The site offers a collection of character voices from different media that you can browse on the main page. New voices are added regularly based on popularity and user requests.
Content & Legal
No, commercial use is not permitted. The legal status of commercializing AI-generated content trained on copyrighted data remains under debate. This project is intended for free, personal use only. The hosting costs for 15.dev are paid out of pocket to maintain this service as a free resource for the community.
Voice requests are welcome! To suggest a new voice, reach out via Twitter or Discord. While not all requests can be fulfilled, community suggestions help prioritize which voices to add next.
